Introduction
We've teamed up with Canonical to bring Ubuntu to our hardware. This collaboration gives our engineering team the ability to bring up Ubuntu and build the software stack required for our boards.
The first board supported through this collaboration is the Grinn GenioBoard - Edge AI SBC, based on the MediaTek Genio 700 and 510 platforms.
Taking ownership of Ubuntu development
The collaboration enables us to develop Ubuntu images for our hardware platforms, integrating Grinn-specific customizations into the kernel, DTB, and Ubuntu userspace. For developers, having Ubuntu readily available on our hardware provides a powerful, out-of-the-box foundation tailored for rapid development and prototyping.
"Taking full ownership of Ubuntu bring-up and development on our platforms is a big step for us," said Robert Otręba, CEO of Grinn. "For our customers, it means Ubuntu is ready to use on our boards and is built by the same team that designs the hardware."
“Enabling hardware partners like Grinn is a step towards making it easier for vendors to quickly build and prototype with Ubuntu.” said Jean-Charles Verdié, Director of Devices/ IoT Field Engineering at Canonical. “With Ubuntu available on Grinn's platforms, developers and users get one of the most popular Linux operating systems right out of the box. Running Ubuntu on Grinn’s hardware allows direct access to the Ubuntu ecosystem and the benefits that come with it.”
Ubuntu on the Grinn GenioBoard
The Grinn GenioBoard – Edge AI SBC is the first board supported through this collaboration. It's available in two versions, based on the MediaTek Genio 700 and 510 processors.
For developers, Ubuntu offers a familiar Linux environment with access to a large software ecosystem. Packages can be installed directly on the board, so developers can test software without rebuilding and reflashing a complete system image after every change.

This makes Ubuntu well suited to development and prototyping, letting teams move from an idea to a working demo faster.
“The GenioBoard solution delivers many key technologies and advanced capabilities provided by the MediaTek Genio 700 platform, enabling a wide variety of benefits,” said CK Wang, VP & GM of MediaTek IoT BU. “With Ubuntu from Canonical on the GenioBoard, companies can more effectively leverage AI, IoT and connectivity powering Grinn’s ecosystem of hardware.”
Getting started with Ubuntu
Setup instructions are available on the Grinn Developer Portal, and getting Ubuntu running on the Grinn GenioBoard takes only about 15 minutes.
The images we provide are specifically built for development, aimed at streamlining prototyping and testing phases. When moving to deployment, Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro provides the long-term security maintenance required for production environments.
