ELEY x-shot is a portable smart scoring system that automatically detects and evaluates shots on paper targets in real time. Designed for both professional competitions and recreational shooting, it combines a Full HD camera, mobile app, and charging hub to deliver precise, wireless scoring.
ELEY (www.eleyxshot.com) is a globally recognized British brand and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of precision ammunition. Founded in 1828 and headquartered in Birmingham, UK, ELEY has built a legacy of excellence in the world of shooting sports for nearly two centuries. The company is trusted by elite competitive shooters, Olympic athletes, and national shooting teams across more than 30 countries. By combining tradition with technological advancement, ELEY remains at the forefront of both professional and recreational target shooting — supporting a global community of shooters in achieving their highest potential.
ELEY x-shot is a smart scoring system designed to modernize the way shooting is tracked and evaluated. It gives shooters immediate feedback by automatically detecting and scoring each shot. The system includes a compact Full HD camera, placed close to the target, and a portable base unit that also serves as a charging station and communication hub. A dedicated mobile app allows users to view real-time scoring, shot history, and performance statistics directly on their phone or tablet. ELEY x-shot is easy to transport, quick to set up, and fully wireless — making it perfect for both professional competitions and everyday training. It supports up to five targets simultaneously, includes automatic shot detection, and can run offline or online, with results synced in real time to the mobile device from up to 50m away. The system is also IP65-rated, ensuring reliable use in outdoor conditions.
Grinn was responsible for the complete development of the ELEY x-shot system delivering the hardware design, embedded software, mechanical enclosure, and testing. At the core of the solution is a Full HD camera, developed specifically to detect shots from short distances with high accuracy. The camera features custom optics calibrated with the calibration machine designed by Grinn during manufacturing to ensure reliable performance from as close as one meter. It connects wirelessly via Wi-Fi and offers up to 18 hours of operation. While the primary charging method is through the transport case, the camera can also be powered via USB-C for added flexibility. The transport case was designed as a central hub. It charges up to five cameras simultaneously, manages data communication, and features a built-in display showing system status, results, and battery levels. The case provides up to 16 hours of battery life, meets IP65 protection standards, and includes an airplane-safe mode for disabling charging during transport. To power the system, we integrated our Grinn MiniSOM-8M module, which handles all communication and processing tasks. We also designed custom scoring targets and developed end-of-line testers to support efficient and reliable production.
The development of ELEY x-shot involved several technical and design challenges that required dedicated engineering effort and custom solutions. One of the key challenges was creating a shot detection algorithm that would be both highly accurate and legally safe to use. Most scoring methods are protected by patents, which meant we had to design a new, proprietary approach from the ground up. The result is a custom algorithm developed by Grinn — now patent-pending — capable of reliably evaluating hits on paper targets. Another major task was optimizing the camera’s performance for close-range use. Standard optics are not designed to deliver high precision at a one-meter distance, which is typical for target placement. To address this, we carefully selected the optical components and developed a specialized calibration machine for use in production. This ensured consistent sharpness and clarity across all units. Reliable wireless communication was also a critical requirement. We fine-tuned the system’s radio parameters to achieve a stable Wi-Fi connection at distances of up to 50 meters between the camera and the base station — even in environments with limited connectivity.
Grinn successfully delivered a complete, field-ready solution that met all technical, usability, and production requirements. The final system combines precision optics, embedded intelligence, and robust mechanical design — all within a compact, portable form factor. ELEY x-shot allows shooters to track their performance in real time, whether training solo or competing remotely across multiple locations.
